O'Neil auditioned for Canada Idol's season 3 at the beginning of 2005 when she was still a high school student. Judges loved her voice and she made it to the Top 100 Round. O'Neil's performance was highly praised by judges. But, O'Neil suffered a significant loss during her Top 10 as well as the Top 9 final weeks when she received votes for the lowest 3 and the the bottom 2. It was a shock to the judges and they suggested that people decide for Melissa O'Neil, who was the contestant with the most impressive ability to sing. In spite of consistently impressive performances throughout the contest, O'Neil never again finished in the bottom three. O'Neil's two further performances of September 7,2005, where O'Neil advanced into the final two of the contest. Werner said that in the morning, the newspapers would be reporting O'Neil's triumph over Rex Goudie as she became her third Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil's Canadian Idol victory was officially made public by Prime Minister Paul Martin immediately.
